Royal Dale Lawson, age 82, of Sidney, passed away Sunday, August 21, 2022, at the Dayton VA Medical Center. He was born December 22, 1939, in Florence, Alabama to the late Ardmore and Ruth (Berkey) Lawson.
He is survived by his sister Lillie (Charles) Cost. Other survivors, nieces and nephews; Brenda Sheets, Deborah (Joseph) Grant, Robert Cost, Jill (Ed) Barger, Gary (Sandy) Lawson, Nancy (David) Lansche, Karen (Steve) Paar, David (Robin) Lawson, Patricia Lawson and Pam (Keith) Gaspard. In addition, he is survived by many great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by brothers Albert Lawson, Ardmore Lawson Jr. and by a sister Peggy Lawson.
Royal graduated from Sidney high School in 1959. He enlisted in the army and received medical training at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Tx. He served as a medic in Hawaii at Schofield Barracks. Royal learned to fly at Wheeler AFB in Hawaii and obtained his commercial pilot’s license. He attended the University of Detroit. In 1967, he worked as a pilot with Allegheny Airlines in Pittsburg, PA and later moved to Peoria, Chicago as a pilot for MATS airline. In 1980, he moved to Denver, CO and worked for Temple Industries, which was owned by Time Inc, as the chief pilot. For three years, he flew a Learjet for the Saudi Arabian Airlines. He flew generals, medics, sick individuals, etc. During Desert Storm, he picked up 4 soldiers. He retired to Colorado Springs, CO then shortly afterwards moved to Sidney, Ohio to be close to family and friends.
One of his hobbies was woodworking where he made many pieces of furniture for family and friends. He was of the Christian faith. He enjoyed watching the Bengals and Cincinnati Reds.
Family and friends may visit on Tuesday, August 30, 2022, from 9:00 until 10:30 a.m. at the Adams Funeral Home, 1401 Fair Road, Sidney. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor John Leighty officiating. Burial will follow at the Dayton National Cemetery with full military honors by the U.S. Army.
