Helen Loomis

Longtime Sidney resident Helen L. Loomis died peacefully at her home early Friday evening December 6, surrounded by family. She had enjoyed 96 years of life. Born July 20, 1928, in Lansing, Michigan, to Ernest Henry and Fairy May Gross, Helen Louise and her younger sister Virginia were raised in Sidney, Ohio, where her father and mother operated Gross Engineering. As an active child in the 1930’s she enjoyed roller skating, going to the public library when it was still located in the Monumental Building, and watching movies at the local theater on Saturdays.

A graduate of Sidney High School, Helen completed training at Springfield City Hospital School of Nursing to become a registered nurse. At age 21, she also became one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, a lifelong devotion. After practicing nursing in Springfield, Marion and Lima, Ohio, she returned to Sidney, where at her job in the office of Dr. Mahuron, she met a young investigator for the State of Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation who would become her husband. She married Stephen Lathrop Loomis in Sidney on July 14, 1957.

Helen and her husband raised four children, three of whom survive: Christopher (with wife, Janet), M. Fern and David (wife, Angela) Loomis. She is also survived by her sister Virginia Cicoria of Rancho Palos Verdes, California, nieces Carmela Louie and Eva Swenson, nephews Vincent and Virgil Cicoria, grandchildren Kevin, Michael, Ryan, Truman and Robin Loomis, and three great-grandsons. Her husband, Stephen L. Loomis, and her son Stephen L. Loomis Jr. predeceased her, as did her parents E.H. Gross and Fairy May Bartmess Gross, and niece Rebecca Cicoria.

Memorial Service will be held on January 18, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall, 1345 Kuther Road, Sidney, Ohio, 45365.
