Don M Haney (83) of Sidney passed away Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at 5:20 a.m. at Lima Memorial Hospital.
Don was born on September 5, 1940, in Sidney, the son of the late William and Eldora (Hughes) Haney.
He is survived by his wife Margery (Miller) Haney, who he married on March 2, 1963, and his two daughters Tracy (Ron) Eck of Sidney and Terri (Kevin) Brennan of Lewis Center. In addition, Don is survived by his grandchildren, Kelli (Jay) McNeal of Westerville, Brian Eck of Groveport, Alexa (Ethan) Molitor of Columbus, and Sydney Brennan and fiancé Sean Spears of Columbus. Don has one great grandchild, Margaret Molitor.
He was preceded in death by his twin sister, Diane Koons.
Don was a graduate of Sidney High School (1958) and a proud member of the All Boy Marching Band when they traveled to Washington DC and won first place at the Cherry Blossom Festival. He was the last married man in Shelby County to be drafted and served in the US Army during the Vietnam conflict.
Don had many gifts which led him to a career in construction and owning and operating the Plaza Barber Shop and H&W Power Equipment in Sidney. He was a member of the Sidney American Legion.
Don was an avid Ohio State Football fan, never missing a game, and was especially fond of The Best Damn Band in the Land. Don thrilled his family by “predicting” the outcome of plays, aided by the fact that he listened to each game on the radio, which happened to be a few seconds faster than the tv broadcast. He loved train spotting, building Heathkit electronic products, solving puzzles, baking his famous secret recipe chocolate chip cookies, and building a winter wonderland miniature village and train set each Christmas. At his core, Don was a family man, who loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He was a life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sidney. He held many leadership positions and enjoyed his time singing in the choir and participating in the bell choir.
The Celebration of Life service will take place on Monday, December 11, 2023, at the Adams Funeral Home, 1401 Fair Road, Sidney, with Rev. Eileen Hix officiating. Viewing hours will begin at 10:00 am with the service starting at noon. Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery, Sidney.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Don’s memory to the Ohio Living Dorothy Love Life Care Fund, 3003 West Cisco Road, Sidney, OH 45365, or the First Presbyterian Church of Sidney, 202 North Miami Ave, Sidney, OH 45365.
