Carleton Mace “Bumer” Umstead died on Monday, May 27, 2024. He was 84 years, 11 months and 4 days old. He was born on June 23, 1939, to Floyd and Wilma (Valentine) Umstead near Plattsville, OH. His brothers and sister were Charles and Jerome Umstead and Carolyn Umstead Dismukes and all are deceased.
Carleton married Shirley Covault on June 21, 1959. Their children are James F. Umstead and Laura, Lisa Umstead-Wright and Jason, Jon H. Umstead and Carol. There are 9 grandchildren and 8 grandchildren-in-law and 1 grandchild that is deceased. There are 10 great grandchildren and 8 nieces and nephews.
Bumer was very active in promoting and participating in various outdoor sports organizations. He had been president for 2 years and vice president for 2 years of the Shelby County Fish and Game. He was a vice president for 3 years, president for 3 years and secretary for 3 years of the Shelby County Bass Club. Bumer was also instrumental in starting the Thursday night Bass Tournaments at Ft. Loramie Lake. For the past 13 years, he has participated in the Wheelin’ Sportsmen Deer Hunt at McConnellsville, OH, sponsored by the National Wild Turkey Federation. He most enjoyed being with all the family, but fishing was his passion.
Bumer proudly served as a member of the United States Marine Corps.
