Thomas E. Bowman, 90, formerly of Sidney, passed away on July 15, 2018, at Stein Hospice in Sandusky, Ohio. He was born March 27, 1928 in Greenville, Ohio, the son of the late Roscoe and Mildred (Schell) Bowman.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Sarah Bess (Loudenback) Bowman, son Marty (Cindy) Bowman and sister Betty (Bob) Stone.
He is survived by a brother Jim Bowman of Maui, Hawaii.
Five children: Mike (Jane) Bowman of Sidney, Dody Bowman of Sandusky, Tim Bowman (Maggie) of Maplewood, Amy (Randy) Moore of Sandusky, Patty (Rob) Mattis of Tipp City, survivors also include, 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
He was a 1947 Graduate of Holy Angels High School where he lettered and set scoring records in basketball. He was an avid softball player for many years. Tom was a lifeguard at Millers Pool, where he met his wife, Sarah Bess. In 1945, at 17, Tom enlisted in the United States Navy (WWII). He was a Seabee (Naval Construction Battalion) on the ship John Bliss, assigned to the South Pacific, where he participated in “Operation Crossroads” Code for the A bomb testing on Bikini Atoll.
He retired from the Ohio Department of Transportation after 33 years in 1984. He was a past member of several veterans and civic organizations in Sidney. He was a lifetime fan of the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Indians, and the Cleveland Symphony.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, July 19, 2018 from 6 – 8:00 p.m. at the Adams Funeral Home, 1401 Fair Road, Sidney. A private graveside service will be held on Friday at 10:00 a.m. at Cedar Point Cemetery, Pasco, with full military honors performed by the Department of the Navy and American Legion Post 217.
